The Time for Wallowing is Done, Action Time is Now

Yesterday sucked big sweaty goat nuts. It was a day of mourning for me and I did wear all black all day. I don't think anyone really got it but that's okay, it was for me.

Now is the time to start looking ahead. To that end, I'm pasting in an email that's been sent around in my family and was forwarded on to me by my sister.

Like you, I am deeply saddened tonight. Not only do I despair for my country but also I am at a loss to understand how half of my
neighbors can see things so totally opposite from our perspective. So, after my immediate reaction to run to another country, which I have rejected for a number of reasons, I'm trying to look carefully at what I can expect in the next four years the effect of that and what I can do to counter the things I object to so strongly.

So, here's what I think. We will have a dramatic change in the Supreme Court and they may change many long standing decisions. They may not...as stare decises (let the decision stand) is a long standing Court tradition. But, let's think about what may happen. Miranda rights reversed, affirmative action rejected, Roe v. Wade reversed, civil rights lost...to name a few. Since we cannot change the Court decisions we can work in our own states on issues like reproductive health care access (a reversal of Roe will toss abortion decisions back to the states.) We can stand with our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to work for rights for them and try to help all those, prisoners, people of color, etc. who will be negatively affected by these changes. We can become more active with our own Congressional representatives sending email to them and to the Pres whenever we have an opinion. (A funny story about that, I keep the White House email address in my list on the computer. When I changed from aol to msn I sent a message to everyone on my list. Isn't it nice that Shrub got an update on my computer address.

I am going to start thinking about what I will personally commit to in preperation for the next election cycle in two years and then the next presidential election cycle in four.

Yesterday was mourning, today is action. That is all for now.
